Record Setting Achievement: First Nationally Accredited Epilepsy Center in the Region
As a Neurologist specializing in Epilepsy with DHR Health’s Neuroscience Institute, I am pleased to announce the establishment of the only accredited National Association of Epilepsy Center (NAEC) in South Texas. This national designation represents a major advancement in neurological care for the Rio Grande Valley and surrounding communities.
This NAEC accreditation signifies that the DHR Health epilepsy center has met rigorous national standards for comprehensive epilepsy diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, and surgical care. This achievement places DHR Health among an elite group of medical facilities in the United States capable of delivering advanced, multidisciplinary epilepsy services at the highest level.
For many years, patients in the Rio Grande Valley with complex epilepsy had to travel several hours to cities such as San Antonio, Houston, or Dallas to access specialized care. This created significant barriers for patients and families, including financial hardship, transportation difficulties, delayed treatment, and interruption of work and school responsibilities. The presence of an NAEC center in the region now allows patients to receive advanced care close to home while remaining connected to their support systems and community.
The center provides services, that historically were unavailable locally, including Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) admissions, continuous EEG monitoring, ambulatory EEG, advanced neuroimaging, neuropsychological evaluation, presurgical epilepsy assessment, and epilepsy surgery. These services are essential for patients with medically refractory epilepsy, many of whom continue to experience seizures despite multiple medications. Early access to specialized epilepsy care can improve seizure control, reduce emergency room visits and hospitalizations, prevent injuries, and significantly improve quality of life.
Beyond patient care, the NAEC accreditation strengthens the healthcare infrastructure of the Rio Grande Valley and South Texas. It enhances physician recruitment, supports advanced EEG technologist training, promotes multidisciplinary collaboration, and increases opportunities for research and innovation. It also establishes DHR Health’s Neuroscience Institute as a regional referral center capable of managing highly complex neurological conditions.
Most importantly, this accreditation helps reduce healthcare disparities in an underserved region where access to specialized neurological services has historically been limited. Patients and families now have access to nationally recognized epilepsy care without leaving the Rio Grande Valley.
The achievement reflects a commitment to clinical excellence, patient safety, innovation, and equitable access to advanced neuroscience care. It demonstrates that world-class epilepsy treatment is now available in the Rio Grande Valley, transforming the future of epilepsy care for the entire region.
