PHARR, Texas - Fundación Index Reynosa has held its annual charity golf tournament at the Tierra Del Sol Golf Club in Pharr.

The event attracted over 30 sponsors to raise money for various charitable causes on both sides of the border.

Enrique Castro, a leader with Index Reynosa, spoke to the Rio Grande Guardian about some of the charitable causes the golf tournament helps.

” We go all the way from blind people, people that can talk, people that can walk, to this haven, everything.  It's a really nice cause that all the managers and the plants and maquiladoras are helping us with. Also, we have now a program for creating centers all over Mexico, Twenty centers. It's about, gosh, more than $60 million worth.”

Index Reynosa has been hosting the tournament for many years, eventually achieving so much success they needed to start Fundación Index Reynosa to better aid the community. Mike Myers, a leader with Index Reynosa, spoke about the success of the charity tournament.

“We went past our non-for-profit limit, and we were paying taxes. So, the Mexican government said, ‘Hey, you guys, why don't you create a foundation?’ It usually takes a few years, but they helped us fast track it because they saw our track record. And so, today, what we're doing, and it's very typical, we've got 160 golfers, and we've got over 30 sponsors.”
