BROWNSVILLE,  Texas - Whenever the Rio Grande Guardian/Business Journal catches up with Roma Mayor Jaime Escobar, Jr., we always want to talk about truck crossings at the international bridge and the latest on the new industrial park.

But, interviewing him in Brownsville recently, we could not the let occasion go by without asking about his Tío, the legendary Juan Escobar.

The mayor has happy to discuss him.

“Tío Juan, if you are listening, if you are watching this interview, you are my idol,” Mayor Escobar said.

“He's been a county judge, a school board president, a state representative, a war hero. The man is brilliant. I'm happy to be an Escobar, and I'm happy that he's my uncle. I'm so proud of that,” Mayor Escobar said.

The mayor could also have mentioned that his uncle was recently inducted into the RGV Sports Hall of Fame and is a famed genealogist, with particular knowledge about his family founding the City of Escobares in Starr County.

In fact, the Guardian recently sat down with Juan Escobar to discuss his genealogy work for a well-received podcast. Click here to watch it.

“I hope that one day I can follow in his footsteps, as far as being the type of leader that he is,” Mayor Escobar said.
