MCALLEN, Texas - State Rep. Vikki Goodwin of Austin held a Meet the Candidate event at Roosevelt's at 7 in McAllen recently as part of her campaign to run for lieutenant governor.
The event was organized by Thomas Ray Garcia, a candidate for State Board of Education District 2.
“My big issues are supporting our public schools, and when I’m lieutenant governor I will be bringing that billion dollars back into our public education system,” said Goodwin in reference to Senate Bill 2 which went into effect Sept 1.
“Another really big issue is water in Texas,” said Goodwin. “Water is going to be the next big fight in Texas, and we need to make sure we’re spending time and bringing in experts.”
Goodwin said she also wants to expand the Homes for Texas Heroes Program, which provides low-interest rate loans and down payment assistance for first responders and teachers.
“Right now, not enough people qualify because the income guidelines are too narrow. I simply tried to expand the income guideline so more people would qualify. I’m looking at social workers because they oftentimes aren’t paid a lot, they do hard work, and we need more of them,” Goodwin said.
Goodwin runs a residential real estate business with her husband in addition to being a Texas state representative since 2019.
Garcia said he is running to improve public education in Texas including opposing school vouchers, supporting the right to religious freedom in school, and support better wages for teachers.
