LAREDO, Texas - Legendary workforce development leader Blas Castañeda has mentored a lot of students during his 39 years in higher education but he has a lot of hope for the latest - Sophia Garcia.

The budding entrepreneur from Laredo is about to start her studies at UT-Austin’s famed McCombs School of Business. She is pursuing a Bachelor's in Business Administration and a Master's in marketing.

“As a higher education executive with 39 years of experience at Laredo College and a private sector consultant specializing in workforce development, manufacturing, and logistics, I have had the privilege of observing and mentoring countless talented individuals. Sophia stands out among them as a truly exceptional student and future leader,” Castañeda told the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service.

Garcia recently graduated from Harmony School of Excellence, a STEM-certified school in Laredo. She was always ranked in the top two percent of her class class.

“I plan to pursue a bachelor's in Business Administration and a Masters in marketing at the University of Texas at Austin, at the McCombs School of Business. I also own a small business where I crochet items and sell them within my community through social media and pop ups,” Garcia told the Guardian.

Asked about her long term goals, she said:

“In the long term, I plan to finish my bachelor's and master's in under five years and acquire a job in marketing. I plan to collaborate with peers to create projects on market, ideas or products. I'm one step closer to this goal by attending a top ranked business school where I will learn all the best marketing and business strategies.”

Asked for examples of her marketing work, Garcia said she managed the Honor Society Instagram page and secured over 100 followers from the Laredo community.  She grew the number of followers for her business  to 300-plus by marketing my business at malls and outlets and sharing her business cards. She also participated in creating a press release for Dr. Federico Zaragoza, for his campaign for president of Texas A&M International University. .

She also assisted Laredo Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and LULAC Council, 2237 in events they hosted that featured Zaragoza as keynote speaker.

Zaragoza, a Laredo native and former president of the College of Southern Nevada, said of Garcia:

“Sophia's brilliance is matched only by her humility and heart. With boundless energy and an unwavering commitment to uplifting her community, she envisions a future where economic diversification transforms the border region into a hub of opportunity and prosperity. UT-Austin’s McCombs School of Business is gaining not just an exceptional scholar, but a leader determined to change the world—starting at home.”

Garcias was full of praise the mentorship provided by Castañeda.

“Blas has been a very big part of why I believe in myself and why I push myself so hard,” Garcia told the Guardian.

“He’s brought me so many opportunities. For example, he had me write emails and a press release, which I had never done before. But he pushed me and told me, I know you're able to do this. He just gave me the guidelines, and I was able to do it, and it was a success.

“So, just having someone who believes in me and has so much knowledge and has achieved so much… Blas is a great person and great mentor.”

Asked how she first got to know Castañeda, Garcia said: “It was at a CTE (Career and Technical Eduction) meeting. I was at my business table. It was a roundtable discussion. He told us about the projects he has been involved in and gave me his card. He has been a great part of my senior year and I can't believe the impact he has had.”
