BROWNSVILLE, Texas — Texas Southmost College is inviting students, faculty and staff to share their creative talents by submitting original work for Issue 3 of Scorpion’s Quill, the college’s annual literary and arts journal.

The submission deadline is October 31, 2026.

Scorpion’s Quill features poetry, short fiction, memoirs and other creative writing, along with visual art such as drawings, paintings, graphic design and photography.

“It's been very popular and we just want to see it continue to grow and get even more submissions,” said TSC English Instructor Amanda Utzman, who oversees the journal. “It has been fantastic for helping students to come out of their shell and really put themselves out there as artists and writers.”

Students, faculty and staff may submit up to three original works for consideration. Student submissions are prioritized, and the selection process is anonymous. TSC students enrolled in art and creative writing courses participate in reviewing submissions and selecting the work featured in the journal.

The publication process culminates with a showcase in spring 2027, where contributors will have an opportunity to celebrate and share their published work with the TSC community.

For students, being published in Scorpion’s Quill is more than an opportunity to see their work in print—it can also provide a valuable addition to a resume.

“That’s a publication. It’s an official document,” Ms. Utzman said. “You can turn this talent into something that's going to be with you for the rest of your life.”
